The Dunster Estate has a number of sites that are designated as Sites of Special Scientific Interest, or SSSI's, due to their outstanding value to the natural world.
There are over 4000 Sites of Special Scientific Interest in England, some 7 percent of the total land area. First designated under the Wildlife & Countryside Act 1981 a SSSI designation means that an area contains one or a number of rare or particularly valuable species, habitats or geological structures.
SSSI's are legally protected and any management carried out within them must be subject to strict controls to ensure that there is no loss or damage to the valuable resource within.
The Crown Estate works closely with its partners to manage the Dunster Estate's SSSI's sensitively and responsibly.
The following is a list of the Sites of Special Scientific Interest on the Dunster Estate
- Cleeve Hill
- Blue Anchor to Lilstock Coast
- Dunster Park and Heathlands
For more info on these and other SSSI's see the Natural England website here
