In 1983 schoolboys found a hoard of eight silver plated coins dating from 102BC to AD350. They had found the Iron Age Hill-fort of Bat's Castle.

Situated at the summit of a 692ft (213m) hill, Bat's Castle is a circular hill-fort enclosure that would have been built during the Iron Age, probably between 100 and 400 B.C. The fortifications and causeways are still present, and give evidence of how the enclosure would have been used at this time.

In addition to the pleasure of the spectacular views that can be seen from Bat's Castle, it is fascinating to stop and imagine the warrior chief and his tribe going about their daily routine all those years ago. They would have tended to their livestock there, and would also spend the day weaving, using pottery for cooking, sharpening iron tools and collecting water and fire wood from the streams and surrounding woodlands- all the while keeping their eye on the landscape for attacking tribes.
